8th Annual Forum of Emerging Leaders in Asian Journalism

Sinar Project was invited to talk about our efforts working with data for governance at the 8th Annual Forum of Emerging Leaders in Asian Journalism held at Wawasan Open University, Penang, Malaysia.

Details

We covered our current projects, how data could be used for investigative journalism with the construction industry database as well as the important role of rights CSOs in ensuring a safe environment for civil society including journalists to be able to work in.

Some points from other speakers:

  • The difficulties faced by journalists from other countries in the region are similar to that faced by civil rights and better governance organisations.
  • Data analysis tools used by journalists are not too different from what we use.
  • Connected China by Reuters http://connectedchina.reuters.com is the standard we should aim for visualisation for the governance data we're currently collecting in our various sub-projects

This was also a great opportunity to connect with journalists who could use our data and tools for our stories. There was also quite a number of students, some of which were very interested in learning more about opportunities for them to apply their journalism skills in civil society.

The event was funded and organized by KAS Media Programme Asia and the PENANG INSTITUTE
